Mench mashes Maine pitching

NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore Kevin Mench belted eight home runs over the weekend as the University of Delaware completed a four-game sweep of the University of Maine 14-4 and 11-8 on Saturday and 9-4 and 9-5 on Sunday.

Maine coach Paul Kostacopoulos said it was evident his team needs work on defense and pitching.

“I think, basically, we played a talented team in Delaware. Really, they did a great job offensivley,” Kostacopoulos said. “We struggled and didn’t quite come up with big defensive plays to get us out of the innings. That kind of told the story for the four games.”

On Saturday’s first game, the Hens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Mench hit his first homer of the day, followed by an RBI double by Brad Eyman two batters later.

The Black Bears got one run back in the second, but the Hens put up five more in the third to make it 7-1. Dan Trivits hit a leadoff homer and Frank DiMaggio hit a two-run double.

In the fourth, Delaware tacked on three more runs with Mench hitting a solo shot and Jamie McSherry hitting a two-run double, making the score 10-1. In the fifth, Mench jacked No. 3 and Eyman added a two-run blast than ran the score to 14-1.

Maine scored three runs in the seventh, but Delaware’s lead was too much to overcome.

Keith Croteau had two hits and two RBIs to lead Maine. Jim Bailin was racked for 11 hits and 10 runs in three and one-third innings of work while taking his second loss of the season.

In the second game, Delaware scored five unearned runs in the third and jumped ahead 7-1. Mench hit his fourth homer of the day in the first inning and his fifth in the sixth. Eyman went 4-for-4 with three RBIs to help lead the Hens.

Chris Frey struck out 11 in seven innings to pick up his second victory of the year.

Gabe Memmert led Maine with three home runs and six RBIs. Jon Hambelton also homered.

In Sunday’s first game, Maine went ahead 3-2 after the top of the third but Delaware rallied to score runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mench belted two more homers during his 3-for-3 game to lead the Hens. Mike Koplove picked up his second win of the season, hurling his third straight complete game and striking out five. Andre Duffie went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

T.J. Sheedy had two singles for Maine. Ron Coombs and Rex Turner each drove in a run.

Tom Koutrouba (3-2) surrendered 13 hits and nine runs in six innings of work.

“What was really evident was our pitchers did not hit good spots, they left the ball in the strike zone,” Kostacopoulos said.

In the second game, Delaware went ahead 9-0 after two innings highlighted by home runs by Mench and Ken Giles.

The Maine bullpen shut down the Hens and allowed the Bears to get back into the game after homers by Rex Turner in the fourth and Gabe Memmert in the fifth.

Maine scrapped for two more runs in the sixth to make the score 9-5, but that was as close it got.

Dave Mullin completed the game for the Hens, pitching seven innings allowing 10 hits and five runs while striking out four.

Maine’s Jason Hall was pounded for eight runs in 1 2/3 innings of work and remains winless against four losses on the season.
