Maine salvages twinbill sweeps> Black Bears 2-6 in America East

TOWSON, Md. – The University of Maine pounded out 19 hits in the final game of the weekend on Sunday to salvage their second doubleheader split with Towson University in two days.

UMaine dropped Sunday’s first game 10-8 before rallying to cruise past Towson 10-4 in the series finale. On Saturday, the Black Bears won their first conference game 5-3 before falling 10-6 to the Tigers.

The Black Bears improved to 10-16 overall, 2-6 in America East, while Towson is 11-8-1, 5-3.

In Sunday’s first game, junior catcher Dusty Reynolds ripped a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run fifth inning for the Tigers in a 10-8 win.

Maine, which led 7-5 entering the fifth, got a pair of singles and three RBIs from Brian Poire and a double and two singles from T.J. Sheedy. Freshman righty Rick Hewey came on in relief of classmate Brandon Brewer in the second and was saddled with the loss. He drops to 1-2.

Kregg Jarvais and Bryan Harvie singled twice each for the Black Bears.

In Sunday’s second game, senior first baseman Gabe Memmert stroked five singles and knocked in two runs in the 10-4 Black Bear win. Sophomore Jon Dickinson pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and three runs, to improve to 2-0.

Julian Bracali smacked a double and three singles for UMaine, while Poire singled three times. The Black Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off starter and loser Peter Buck, who dropped to 2-2.

In Saturday’s first game, Tom Koutrouba threw a complete game nine-hitter, striking out eight and stranding nine Tiger runners to lead Maine to a 5-3 win. Ron Coombs blasted a two-run homer and Tony Fernandez had a two-run single.

In Saturday’s second game, Nick Agoglia fueled a 10-run fourth inning on nine hits with a home run, leading Towson to the 10-6 win. Paul Boland had a two-run single, and Liam Healy smacked a two-run triple.

Husson takes three of four

The Husson College Braves won three out of their four weekend games, splitting a Saturday doubleheader with St. Thomas Aquinas, and sweeping Johnson and Wales on Sunday to push their record to 11-10.

On Saturday in Orangeburg, N.Y., the Braves had a four-run second inning and a five-run fifth, and held off a late St. Thomas rally to win the opener 9-6. Troy Corey and Aaron Largay each had two-run doubles for Husson. Donnie Sawyer had two RBIs on a single and double and Barrett Williams stroked two singles.

Steve Lechich hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Luke Toffen blasted a grand slam in the sixth for 9-3 St. Thomas.

In the late game, the Braves had the bases loaded in the seventh inning but couldn’t score, losing a 5-4 decision. Greg Donahue hit a two-run double in the first for St. Thomas and had three RBIs on the day. Brian Brophy smacked two singles with an RBI.

Largay and Corey each had run-scoring singles for Husson. Jason Cyr had a single and double, and Takeo Nakamura recorded two singles.

On Sunday in East Providence, R.I., Roy Peary had a 4-for-4 day with three RBIs to lead Husson to a 7-3 win over Johnson & Wales. Peary hit a two-run single in the second and an RBI single in the sixth. Sawyer had two singles.

Tom Borgina hit a solo homer for Johnson & Wales in the second inning. Marc Deveaux had two singles.

In the second game, the Braves powered their way past to a 14-9 win, as Sawyer blasted a two-run shot and Dan Curtis had a three-run homer. The Braves scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth.

Curtis had four RBIs and came a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Brian Malo had three doubles and an RBI, and Jason Cyr had two singles and a RBI.
