BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I am amazed that Sens. Snowe and Collins are taking time from what they truly were elected to do, to spend it “standing up for feminism,” as they stated on a recent “Face the Nation” program. The political mud-slinging we have experienced in the past and are now experiencing again is far removed from the feminist issue in this country, although they would like us to think otherwise. There has been no definitive proof regarding the allegations against President Clinton. They would be doing far more for the country if they concentrated on issues more relevant to the people of this nation, as he has been doing.

Unfortunately, for the American people, partisan politics continues to be the main focus in Washington. The Republicans are agitated because President Clinton has worked diligently and has made many positive improvements. This obviously is unacceptable to them even though it has been good for the citizens. Rather than present a positive attitude they would rather concentrate on negativism.

I rather expect if the tables were turned and we had a Republican president, the Democrats would be doing the same. When we get down to the nitty gritty, are there many in Washington who haven’t had their own personal issues which could be dragged through the mud. I think not. I, for one, am thoroughly disgusted with it all. So senators, be the first to get your feet unstuck and get back to work! Charles L. Harris Sr. Hermon
