MaineWatch to examine east-west highway plan

LEWISTON — The proposed east-west highway would stretch from Calais to Bangor and on to Newport, possibly splitting into two roads at that point. Some have suggested the road head toward New Hampshire, Montreal or Quebec City. This is the topic of discussion on the next edition of MaineWatch, which will air at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18, and 5 p.m. Sunday, April 19, on Maine Public Television.

Discussing the issue will be residents, experts and legislative leaders, including U.S. Rep. John Baldacci, who is working to get federal money for a study of the proposal.

The cost of the highway proposal is $1 billion. Some say this could help the state in trade and tourism, while others say repairing other roadways should be given higher priority.
