Chief says Baileyville man hit truck at Calais fire

CALAIS — The Fire Department is reviewing its policy on blocking roads leading to fire scenes after a Baileyville man allegedly struck a parked truck with his vehicle at a fire scene.

Wayne McNally, 34, driving a 1981 Ford truck, was arrested around 10 p.m. Sunday and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, operating a motor vehicle after license suspension, and possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Additional charges may be filed against McNally in connection with the accident, Sgt. Mark Silk of the Calais Police Department said Monday.

The Calais Fire Department was called to the corner of Lincoln and Germain streets Sunday night when a homeowner apparently fell asleep and smoke from burned food filled the house.

When firefighters arrived, they parked their vehicles along the side of the road, in accordance with their usual procedure, and entered the building to ascertain the seriousness of the fire. The flashing red lights were activated on the vehicles, officials said.

Fire Chief Danny Carlow said that while firefighters were inside the house, McNally sped through the area and struck a 1983 Chevrolet truck owned by firefighter Mike Carr.

“In this particular case, the individual approached the scene, stopped, turned around and went back, and then came back through the scene,” Carlow said. “There was a real potential for tragedy there.”

Police Sgt. Silk said McNally was traveling west on Lincoln Street toward North Street when the accident occurred. He said a Calais police officer, who was directing traffic at the fire scene, pulled McNally over. Silk said the collision did only minor damage to firefighter Carr’s truck.

McNally was arrested and remained in Calais jail Monday night. He is expected to appear in Calais District Court today.

Carlow said there have been tragedies around the country in which firefighters have been injured when motor vehicles traveled through fire scenes at high rates of speed.

The chief said city policy requires that a street be blocked when firefighters are laying fire hose. He said that during the next few weeks, he would review the policy with Calais firefighters.
