In the April 23 Maine Day section there was a news story about a greyhound that was found dead in the Saco River with a 30-pound cement block tied with rope to its body. I hope the authorities find out who is responsible and punish him or her to the fullest extent of the law.
I hope that in the future the lawmakers in Augusta will increase the fine and punishment from what is allowed now (one year in jail and a $2,000 fine). I think a $5,000 fine and a five-year jail term would be more appropriate. This was a terrible act. If anyone knows anything about this, do the right thing and tell the Saco police Department.
There are too many families who are getting pets today and not giving them the proper love and care they deserve. If anyone sees an animal being abused, call the local police department. In the meantime, write to your lawmakers and ask them to increase the punishment in animal abuse cases. Everett Maddocks Winterport
