Wildcats, Broncos split two Millard holds off Hampden hitters

HAMPDEN – Jessie Poulin fanned 12 for the Broncos’ 13-0 victory in the first game of a schoolgirl softball doubleheader against Presque Isle on Saturday, but the Wildcats battled back in the second contest, getting a 10-3 win.

In the late game, the ‘Cats scored four runs in the second inning for a 7-0 lead and pitcher Maren Millard held Hampden to five hits. Cara Miller smacked two singles and Millard, Lacy Sawyer and Bre Norsworthy each added a single.

In the first game, Poulin went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sarah Fraunhofer had a double and two RBIs and Sarah Aylward hit two singles. Amy Roy had one hit for Presque Isle.

PVHS 4, Schenck 2

At Schenck, two Wolverine errors in the fourth inning led to the go-ahead runs and gave PVHS the win in a rain-shortened Saturday contest.

Heather McGinn had the Howlers’ only two hits, a single and double. Amanda Sherwood had a single, the lone hit for Schenck.

Orono 7, Ellsworth 6

At Orono, Caroline Levy’s two-run double drove home Kati Libby and Meg Taylor with two outs in the sixth inning, giving the Red Riots the comeback win.

Levy finished with two hits and two RBIs, and teammate Meg Taylor came a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

Rachel Smallidge had a single, double, home run and three RBIs for Ellsworth. Sara Roy also hit a home run.

Bangor 4, Brewer 1

At Brewer, the undefeated Rams pounded out 14 hits and scored two insurance runs on Brewer errors for the win.

Jamie Kenny led Bangor with two singles, a double and an RBI. Renee Spellman stroked two singles and an RBI, Melanie Deyone had two base hits and Danielle Pinkerton contributed a single and a double.

Kristen Frey lined a run-scoring single for Brewer.

Hampden sweeps Presque Isle

At Hamdpen, a powerful offense fueled the Broncos to their first wins of the season, downing the Wildcats 16-11 and 10-3 in a Saturday doubleheader.

In the opener, Hampden used seven-run innings in the third and sixth to come from behind. Ben Preston rapped two singles and a double for two RBIs, and stole two bases. Paul Trask stroked three singles for two RBIs, and also stole two bases. Jared Tyler had two base hits and two RBIs.

Matt Allen blasted a first-inning three-run homer for Presque Isle. Marc Wood had two singles, a triple and two RBIs.

In game two, Jason Littlefield struck out four, got the complete-game win, and contributed a single, double and an RBI for Hampden. Preston started the offense off with a three-run double in the first. Tyler laced two singles, a double and an RBI.

Chris Michaud hit two doubles for Presque Isle.

At East Millinocket, Shawn Rosebush pitched a two-hitter and hit an RBI-triple in a rain-shortened victory for the Wolverines.

Rosebush’s triple and Ryan O’Donnell’s two-run single made up half of Schenck’s six-run fourth inning.

Bruce Hallett and Nate Cyr each hit a single for Penobscot Valley of Howland.

Ellsworth 12, Orono 2

At Orono, Ben Donaldson and Jason Sirois each smacked a home run to help lift the Eagles.

Donaldson, whose two-run homer came in the fifth, went 2-for-3 and tallied three RBIs. Sirois went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

The Riots had a chance to take the lead in the fourth, when Orono loaded the bases with one out, but Ellsworth pitcher D.J. Lindsey struck out the next hitter and forced the final Riot to ground out. Orono’s Chris Crockett hit a solo home run in the first inning and Stuart Cady scored on a walk.
