Allen helps own cause in PI’s win

PRESQUE ISLE – Presque Isle pitcher Matt Allen notched his first win of the season, thanks in large part to his performance at the plate, and the host Wildcats edged Houlton 5-3 Monday afternoon.

Allen’s bases-loaded double off the right field fence tied the game and touched off a four-run rally in the fifth as Presque Isle won its first game. Marc Wood paced the Wildcats with a triple, a single, and an RBI. Allen struck out seven and walked two in the eight-hitter.

For the visiting Shiretowners, Mike Weston singled twice and Joe Husted hit an RBI single.

Katahdin 12, Penquis 4

At Milo, Kent Smallwood singled twice and doubled, driving in three runs to lift Katahdin past Penquis.

Nick Cullen hit two singles and a double and drove in two runs for the Cougars. Josh Roy doubled twice.

Tony Heal singled and doubled for Penquis. Ryan Weston drove in two runs with a double.

At Eastport, Shead jumped out to a 16-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the win.

Ricky Cox hit two doubles, a single and drove in four runs for the Tigers. Cox also scored four runs. Jimmy Mitchell doubled, singled twice, and knocked in four runs.

Kris Ferguson banged out two doubles and a single, and scored two runs for Lubec.

At Hodgdon, Jeremy Knowles had a single and double to lead the Hawks’ offense.

Pitcher Jerry Hanning fanned eight in earning the complete game win for Hodgdon.

Chris Webb and Nick Russell contributed a single and double each for Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook, while Brandon Lindsay slammed a solo home run.

At Limestone, left-hander Ethan Bagley struck out 14 while scattering nine hits and walking two to give the Eagles the victory.

Morgan Coghill backed Bagley with two singles and two RBIs. Sean Ward slammed an RBI triple and Ed Chappelle smacked a run-scoring double.

Dave Paradis had three singles and a triple for Fort Kent and Mitch Wakem doubled, singled and drove in two runs.

Caribou, Nokomis split

At Newport, the Caribou Vikings and Nokomis Warriors split a doubleheader.

In the first game, Allan Steck, Aaron Wyman and Jamie Shanahan combined to go 9-for-14 at the plate to pace the Vikings.

Shanahan pitched a complete game, going 4-for-5 and scoring three runs. Wyman ripped a single, double and triple with one RBI. Steck hit a single and double and drove in three runs.

Adam Hawthorne smacked two singles and drove in a run for the Warriors. Greg Morse had a single, double and one RBI.

In game two, Jared Otis pitched a four-hitter to help Nokomis earn the split.

Morse and Adam Austin each hit two singles for Nokomis. Richie Otis doubled and scored a pair of runs.

Steck doubled for Caribou.

At East Machias, Jason Ramsdell singled in two runs in the bottom of the fifth to give Washington Academy the win over Woodland.

Mike Ferguson hit two home runs and drove in three runs for Washington Academy. Brandon Ashby slammed a home run and a double and James Smith singled and doubled.

Josh Thornton singled twice and Mark Knowles doubled in a run for Woodland.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Brock Hartford pitched eight innings, striking out 11 to lead Foxcroft past Hermon in extra innings.

Wes Sands singled to start the eighth for the Ponies and scored on an RBI single by Chris Walker for the winning run. Justin Clawson ripped two singles.

Eric Reynolds singled twice for Hermon. Matt Cox went the distance striking out 13.

At East Corinth, Steve Kinghorn launched a first inning grand slam to lift Sumner past Central.

Mike Hardy singled twice and drove in a run for Sumner. Keith Partridge tripled and singled and Ed Houston had two singles for Central.

At Deer Isle, Joe Brown spun a complete-game three-hitter, striking out 11 to pace Dexter past Deer Isle-Stonington.

Brock Kimball smacked three singles for the Tigers. Nate Connors singled twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Jason Weed, Andy Eaton and Eric Ray each had a single for the Mariners.

At Lee, Nathan Cyr no-hit the Pandas for four innings in a game called by rain after six innings.

Cyr struck out seven and walked three, knocking in three runs with a double and a single. Steve Hallett had a double and a single, good for two RBIs, and Benji Jipson added an RBI double.

Brad Thibodeau walked and scored four times.

Adam Peters broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth. Alex Nicholas also singled.

At Bangor, Joe Frigon pitched a five-hitter, striking out 13 as Valley of Bingham downed Bangor Christian.

Jacob Pierce doubled in two runs in the first to give Valley the lead. He finished with a single, double and triple. Chris Willer had three singles and Wade Morrill hit two.

Nate Conley and Chris Snell singled twice each for Bangor Christian.

At Belfast, Belfast’s Sazi Guthrie struck out 12 batters en route to a complete-game victory.

Ryan Maheux and Jeff Parker contributed two singles each for the Lions, while Peter Klausmeyer slammed a single and home run.

Travis Reynolds finished with two singles for the Tigers and Derric Prescott added a solo homer.

At Ellsworth, Nick Noddin helped lead the host Eagles to victory with a double, single, and three RBIs.

Ben Alley (2-0) pitched a four-hitter to keep his Eagles unbeaten through four games. Ricky McDonald hit three singles and Courtney Bunker had two singles and an RBI.

Starting pitcher Josh Sadlier’s double was the lone extra-base hit for George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill. A nagging illness forced Sadlier out in the second inning.
