PORTLAND — Maine Public Radio and WMTW-TV of Auburn won top honors at the annual Maine Associated Press Broadcasters Association contest.

Maine Public Radio won first place in five categories. And WMTW-TV won first place in six categories to take station of the year honors in their respective divisions. Awards were presented Saturday night.

WGME-TV of Portland won first place for television newscast, and Maine Public Radio won best radio newscast.

Maine Public Radio also won for spot news for its coverage of the permanent shutdown of Maine Yankee nuclear power plant, along with feature, public affairs and sports special categories.

WMTW-TV took first-place honors for breaking news of a fatal fire in Lewiston. It also won in other categories including writing, videography, sports videography, sports play-by-play, and sports special.

Among other first-place finishers, WCSH-TV of Portland won for a feature on the Maine National Guard in Bosnia, along with sportscast and public affairs. WGME-TV won for election coverage and continuing coverage of Maine Yankee’s problems.

In the radio division, WGAN of Portland won first place for election coverage, continuing coverage and enterprise, and WZON of Bangor won for sports play-by-play and sportscast.
