Mainers to open their doors to public on Open Farm Day

WARREN — On Sunday, July 26, 90 Maine farms will open their doors to offer the public a chance to learn about food and fiber at the ninth annual Open Farm Day. Farmers will offer demonstrations, animal and crop displays, and farm-raised products for sale.

WARREN — On Sunday, July 26, 90 Maine farms will open their doors to offer the public a chance to learn about food and fiber at the ninth annual Open Farm Day.

Farmers will offer demonstrations, animal and crop displays, and farm-raised products for sale. Some activities include barn and field tours, milking, hay rides, petting zoos, nature trails, free samples for tasting and refreshments. Visiting hours are generally from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. though some farms extend the hours for special events such as early morning milking.

Some of the farms participating in the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District are: Anniversary Farm, Alna; Goranson Farm, Dresden; Morris Farm, Wiscasset; Straw’s Farm, Edgecomb; Cunningham Island Alpaca Stud Farm, Newcastle; Hidden Acres Llama Farm, Jefferson; Ridge Mist Llamas, Newcastle; Windsong Herbs and Gardens, South Bristol; Black Locust Farm, Washington; Brae Maple Farm, Union; Bluecastle Farm, Warren; Agricola Farms, Union.

Organizations that have taken leadership for Open Farm Day are the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Maine Department of Agriculture, Food & Rural Resources; and the Threshold to Maine Resource Conservation & Development Area Inc. Support also is received from Nezincot Farm of Turner.
