Advocate releases latest calling-rate comparison

AUGUSTA — The state public advocate has published the second edition of the “Rate Watchers In-State Phone Guide,” a free seven-page booklet comparing the rates of 12 in-state long-distance telephone companies.

In addition to comparing the rates charged for each service offered by the major in-state toll providers in Maine, the guide also provides consumer tips and news of interest. This edition shows prices ranging from 10 cents to 51 cents per one-minute call within the state.

“Competition for in-state toll calling is increasing, and many customers can save money on their telephone bill by switching carriers,” said Wayne Jortner, an attorney in the Public Advocate’s Office. He said because rates are so far ranging, consumers need to be educated in order to receive the best rate plan.

“If your average per-minute cost for calls within Maine is greater than 12 cents per minute, you should carefully consider the alternatives now easily available,” said Jortner.

The rate comparison chart is a tool that provides updated information about the phone carriers registered to offer in-state, long-distance service within Maine. Some of these telephone carriers have raised in-state toll call rates, while others lowered them since the first edition of the Rate Watchers Guide was issued.
