Bradford Reed of Boothbay Harbor has put in for a moose permit for the October hunt every year since the lottery started in 1980.
So when Reed learned Thursday that his name was the first drawn in the lottery, you’d think the hunter would have been excited. But he was not fazed.
“I don’t know. I’m nearly 60 years ago. In a normal life, it’s just a normal hunt,” Reed said. “It will be something different.”
There were 1,995 permits randomly selected by a computer Thursday. Five permits were auctioned to provide scholarships for Maine youngsters to attend Maine Conservation Camp.
A total of 1,800 permits were awarded to instate hunters and 200 to out-of-state hunters.
Of the 73,001 hunters who entered the lottery, 58,666 were from Maine.
Reed’s good fortune comes at the perfect time for him. Last year he bought a camp in Greenville for when he retires in two years. Reed has been hunting around Moosehead Lake for year, and since he got his pick of hunting spots, he will hunt his first moose in the area he knows.
“I’ve been going to Greenville for years. I’m a trapper and a hunter. I’ve shot a lot of deer,” Reed said. “I’m quite familiar with the area, I don’t think it will be that big a chore. It’s not nearly as challenging as deer. It will be different.”
Reed said the most satisfying part of getting his permit was not the thought of being in the hunt. And he is not excited over finally getting the chance to hunt a moose. Reed is just glad he can quiet his buddies.
“My friends have all rubbed it in. This year, I can rub it in,” Reed said.
The permit winners were announced at the American Legion Hall, Post No. 2, in Augusta Thursday.
Maine’s annual moose hunt will be held from Oct. 5-10. The hunt has been expanded to allow for 2,000 permits, up from the 1,500 issued last year as the herd is healthy and growing.
In last year’s hunt, 90.0 percent of the hunters bagged a moose.
