CONCORD, N.H. — New Hampshire is about to become the first state to ban some lead fishing sinkers to protect birds.
A legislative committee agreed Monday on a ban that would take effect in 2000. It would apply to fishermen who use sinkers weighing less than an ounce on ponds and lakes. Violators would be fined $250.
Larger lead sinkers would still be allowed, as would the use of lead sinkers in rivers, streams and in saltwater.
