LISBON FALLS — Two Brunswick residents accused of masterminding a Beanie Baby heist were caught as they tried to unload the collectible stuffed animals in Auburn, police say.
The theft of between 300 and 400 Beanie Babies from a redemption center in Lisbon Falls and a food store in Lisbon amounted to enough toys to fill two small boxes. But it represented a major haul because of the value of some of the individual Beanie Babies, said Lisbon Detective Patrick Gagnon.
One doll alone — Spice — sells for $210.
Shawn Chase and a 17-year-old girl were arrested after they confessed Monday night, Gagnon said.
Police were tipped off after learning that two people were trying to sell Beanie Babies in Auburn. “As luck would have it, the suspects were at the store trying to unload a bag of these when the officers got to the store,” Gagnon said.
Gagnon said he found burglary tools and another bag of Beanies in the juvenile’s car outside the store. The rest of the dolls were recovered at a Freeport residence.
