STANDISH – It was the ultimate finishing touch on what has been a golden year for Falmouth High School athletics.

After winning state titles in boys soccer, boys basketball, plus boys and girls tennis, the Yachtsmen added a gleaming baseball state Class C trophy to the school’s burgeoning championship hardware collection Saturday night.

The 16-3 Yachtsmen won their second state title in three years with a 4-0 victory over Washington Academy of East Machias at St. Joseph’s College’s Ward Field.

“The intensity and the winning attitude rubbed off on all of us. I guess it carried into the baseball season,” said Spike Einsiedler, starting shortstop, starting guard in basketball and starting forward in soccer.

“They’ve been in a lot of big games,” said Falmouth assistant baseball coach and head basketball coach David Halligan. “This senior class was on the state Little League championship team, the 13-year-old Babe Ruth state champs, and the 14-15 state champions… They’re very talented.”

While it has been a phenomenal year in Falmouth, don’t mention the words Falmouth or Yachtsmen in East Machias any time soon – especially to WA head baseball-basketball coach Buddy Wood – as the “Royal Blue and Gold” have now twice thwarted the Raiders’ bids for a state crown this year.

“It’s tough, but we didn’t really look at it that way,” said Wood. “We just didn’t hit the ball very well today, and we’ve been hitting it great all season long.”

The main reason for that was Falmouth senior pitcher Tyler Anderson (6-0), who hadn’t lost a game since midway through his freshman season.

Some pregame scouting convinced Anderson to use a looping curve to keep WA’s batters away from the inside part of the plate.

“I was watching them in batting practice and saw they were pulling everything to left field so I knew they weren’t going to hit on the outside part of the plate,” he said.

Anderson pitched a two-hitter while striking out 11 batters and walking two. He also escaped a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the second. WA stranded seven base-runners, five in scoring position.

“He led with a good curveball and it was better than we’d been led to believe,” Wood said. “He threw as well as anyone who’s thrown against us this year.”

While Anderson was baffling Wood’s lineup, his teammates were making WA pay for every fielding miscue and mental mistake with three unearned runs.

Falmouth built on a tenuous 1-0 lead with two unearned runs in the third. After Roger Levesque – another tri-sport starter – reached first on a fielding error and stole second, Einsiedler singled through the shortstop hole. Tim Frend scored Levesque with his second sacrifice fly of the game and Kerry Robillard brought in Einsiedler with a two-out single to center before being thrown out at second.

Falmouth added insurance in the sixth as Jason Crane made it all the way to second on a two-out fielding error, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on Jason Holbrook’s single up the middle.

“We knew we had to be aggressive on the bases, and we were; we had to make them make decisions out there, which I think we did; and we had to put the ball in play, which we did,” said coach Bob Gilman. “And then we left the rest up to Tyler. That’s a pretty good formula, leaving things up to Tyler.”

Anderson finishes his Falmouth career with a school-record 28-1 lifetime mound mark.

WA’s Glen Wood was tagged with his first loss of the season despite scattering six hits and keeping Falmouth hitters off-balance. His Raiders end the year 16-2.
