Collier, Cady to contest Junior Bunyan title

Two days after the adults had their day in the sun, a younger generation of amateur golfers will take its turn at driving and putting for notoriety.

A field of more than 60 golfers will take to the links at Kebo Valley Country Club in Bar Harbor today for the 23rd installment of the Junior Bunyan Golf Tournament.

Several familiar names are expected to dot the leader board during today’s 18-hole tourney for boys and girls ages 13 through 17 (the nine-hole McPheters Cup will also be held for youths ages 12 and under).

Among those who came close last year and are back for another swing are Andy Collier, who finished in a two-way tie for second place last year, and Orono’s Stuart Cady, who was three shots behind Collier in fourth with an 86.

Cady will be looking to substantially improve over that score by rekindling the form and effort that gave him an 80 and landed him in third place.

Other top returning golfers are Adam Smith, Ryan Weggler, James Frost, and Noah Tapley, the top four, respectively, in the ages 13-14 bracket last year.

As of Monday, only five golfers had preregistered to take part in the McPheters Cup, which drew seven entrants last year and nine two years ago.

Today’s action will begin with two 12-under flights teeing off at 9 a.m. Golfers ages 13-14 will go off at 9:32 a.m. and ages 15-17 – the largest group in the tourney with 43 golfers – will start at 10:16 a.m.
