BANGOR — The warm rains that poured down on June 14 melted away the ice and made Stephen Proctor of Bangor the winner of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s first Great Music Ice Mountain Melt Contest.
The contest, held to raise funds for the BSO, began on March 26 when a hole was drilled in the middle of the city’s “ice mountain” in the old railroad yard at the corner of Main and Railroad streets. A fluorescent orange pipe was inserted into the lowest strata of the ice as Scott Burditt, one of the BSO musicians, played a solo on his French horn. Fifty-fifty raffle tickets were sold to predict the time the ice would melt enough to expose the top of the pipe. Proctor won by picking the exact melt time of 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14.
Proctor will receive a check for $640.50, and Miller’s restaurant will receive $64.05 for selling the winning ticket. The remainder of the money raised will benefit the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
