Young runners show off track skills> The top two finishers in each event qualified for the state meet

BANGOR – Sarah Briggs of Orono finished the 400-meter run in the Hershey District Track Meet on Tuesday with a shoelace untied and distance to spare. Briggs didn’t care.

She went to her arms, pumping and cranking to win the 11-12 age group division in 1 minute, 16.82 seconds with all the effort of a future track star.

Of course, there’s no way to tell if track is in Briggs’ future. Tuesday’s race at Cameron Stadium was her first.

“I wanted to do soccer. When my mom and I went to the rec center to look for a soccer camp [in Orono], we saw this meet. I’ve always wanted to do track. I decided to try,” said Briggs, whose family recently moved to Orono from Southwest Harbor. “I think I like it. I did better than I thought I would.”

Having finished in the top two in the 400 as well as the 800, which she won in 3:37.21, Briggs qualified for the state meet held on July 14 at Brewer – but that wasn’t in Briggs’ plans.

“In my dreams,” she smiled. “There was someone ahead of me. I tried to make my goal to stay with them and then around [the far turn] to go ahead of them. I was very dead at the end. I ran pretty hard.”

Spoken like a veteran.

For someone who prepared for the meet by doing pushups and weight training using canned goods, Briggs did all right. In fact, after joining the Orono youth team and coach Jeff Mateja the day before, Briggs may even be hooked.

But Briggs’ experience is not at all typical of the meet’s top athletes, who competed in three age divisions (9-10, 11-12 and 13-14).

At the other end of the spectrum from Briggs’ spur-of-the-moment approach to the sport is Emily Capehart.

The 14-year-old from Bangor is not exemplary of the some 200 athletes at the meet, either. Capehart is a veteran. And a decorated one.

Capehart, who won the standing long jump soaring 7 feet, 10 1/2 inches and took second in the 200 (29.84) and the 100 (14.36), has competed in the meet every year she has been eligible. Twice she finished well enough at the state meet to be chosen for the North American Regional meet in Hershey, Pa.

The Region 6 coordinators choose the team that goes to the national meet in Pennsylvania from the best performances turned in at state meets in Maine, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Even if Capehart doesn’t make the Region 6 team, her season won’t end at Brewer. At the end of July, Capehart will be competing in the pentathlon at the USA Track and Field meet in Seattle. She competed in that meet when she was 10.

“I get pretty nervous. The runners from New York are so amazing,” Capehart said. “They are so much faster. Their work ethic is a little better. I take the winter off, but they run just as hard. They’re used to it. I guess if I was there, I would be too.”

Then there is the brand of Hershey athlete who doesn’t take the meet seriously at all. Like Dana Frasz, who already has a track star’s portfolio, but a basketball player’s disposition.

Tuesday, Frasz, who will be a sophomore at Foxcroft Academy, won the 13-14 division in the 200 in 28.84 and the 800 in 2:29.65. The last time Fries ran the 800 she clocked 2:21, placing second in the Class B state meet behind Belfast’s phenom Erin Herbig.

In fact, Tuesday’s race was a tune-up to prepare Frasz for her next meeting with Herbig in the high school 800 at the Maine Distance Festival on Saturday.

Yet track is nothing more than a diversion for Frasz, who would rather be shooting hoops.

“I just started running a couple of days ago. I haven’t run for a couple of weeks. I’ve been playing summer basketball,” said Frasz in a T-shirt that read “Summer Hoop Camp, Gotta Love It!”

“I think I’ve done as well as I’m probably going to do [running 2:21]. Track is not a lot of fun, there’s a lot of sitting around. Basketball is a lot more fun.”
