LOUDON, N.H. – Kelly Moore said he loves “flat” tracks. So New Hampshire International Speedway and its 12 percent banking suits him just fine.
“That’s what I grew up on,” said Moore after holding off Dale Shaw of Center Conway to win the Pennzoil-Replacement Auto Parts 100 Busch North series race at New Hampshire International Speedway Saturday.
The 39-year-old Moore, a Waldoboro, Maine native who lives in Scarborough, has won both Busch North races at NHIS so far this season.
There are two more at NHIS later this summer.
Moore said he was disappointed that he didn’t win the pole – Farmington rookie Jeff Taylor did that for the second consecutive race – and had to go off in the sixth spot. But he said the weather conditions changed during the qualifying which hurt him and helped the other qualifiers.
Shaw made his last move to catch Moore with three laps left by going to the inside in the turn but Moore held him off and stretched out his lead.
“I knew I could pull away in the straightaway,” said Moore, who has two seconds to go with his two firsts.
Moore’s victories at NHIS ended a long victory drought and came after he won a battle with cancer this past winter.
“The crew did a great job. They kept working hard while I was recuperating,” said Moore.
Moore said even though Shaw had a last-minute borrowed engine (from eighth-place finisher Bryan Wall), Shaw ran a strong race and he knew he would challenge him “every eight to 10 laps.”
Taylor was the next Maine finisher at 14th. Although he started on the pole, he was satisfied.
“This is the first time we’ve gone through a race without something going wrong like a flat tire,” said Taylor, who closed the gap on Turner’s Ben Rowe in the rookie of the year points chase. “Now that we’ve got the setup for qualifying, we’ve got to get set up for the races.”
Rowe started 15th but wound up 34th.
Strong’s Tracy Gordon was 14th after starting 17th.
“We ran pretty decent. We’re just a little underpowered. I need some big-time sponsors,” said Gordon who pointed out that his motor cost him only $13,000 which is far less than the $35,000-$40,000 motors he is racing against.
Gordon said some potential sponsors are going to watch him race next Saturday at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware.
Yarmouth’s Billy Penfold, who started 34th, finished 19th and Detroit’s Adam Friend moved up three places, from a 28th starting position to a 25th place finish.
Friend said he and his crew had been out straight for two weeks transferring a Ford Taurus body to what used to be a Thunderbird.
“We had to put in a couple of 20-hour days,” said Friend.
Friend said he was hurt by an unscheduled pit stop.
“We changed a set of tires but we had to come back in because we needed to make a wedge adjustment. That cost us eight to 10 spots,” said Friend, who drove a Ford sponsored by Nichols College.
The Dudley, Mass.-based college is sponsoring Friend by taking care of his brother Aric’s tuition and room and board, a bill of approximately $20,000 per year.
“There were 50 people from the college here,” said Adam Friend, a North East Pro Stock Association regular who will run four Busch North races this season including one at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) on Aug. 8.
