BANGOR – Used sparingly as a pitcher during district and state tournament action, Tim Wing provided his Brewer team with a solid performance against Saco Friday night.

“He did exactly what we wanted him to do,”coach Dana Corey said. “We asked him to give us three or four innings. He gave us five strong innings and kept extra people off base.”

The lefthanded Wing, who usually plays in the outfield, allowed only two hits over five innings, while only walking one batter, as Brewer eliminated Saco 5-1 in state Senior League tourney action at Mansfield Stadium.

Brewer will face South Portland National tonight at 7:30 p.m. To win the 14-15 state title, Brewer must defeat South Portland twice, with the if-necessary game played Sunday.

Brewer scored first with a run in the second. Brandon Gray singled, moved to second on a balk, took third on a flyout to right and scored on Warren Chase’s single.

An opportunistic Saco squad tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Tyler McKenney and Trapper Pelletier singled and advanced on a double steal. McKinney appeared trapped when Brewer third baseman Joel Barrett fielded Pat Davis’s grounder and fired home. McKinney would score as Gray’s throw sailed over third base.

Andy Sullivan’s two-out double to left in the fifth provided what would be the winning runs for Brewer, highlighting a three-run inning.

“Andy has, over the last few games, had a lot of opposite field hits,” Corey explained. “He’s started using the whole field.”

After adding another run in the sixth, Brewer turned its fortunes over to righthander Jason Harvey, who tossed two innings of no-hit relief to keep Saco at bay.

“We made some really good plays in the field,” Corey said. “[Saco’s] a quality ballclub, no question about it.”

Sullivan and Abram Allard doubled for Brewer.

Saco batters had a tough time adjusting, coach Mike McKenney explained.

“They mixed their pitches up,” McKenney said. “We’d be sitting on the fastball, they kept changing up with curves.

“We only had two hits,” McKenney added. “You’re not going to win if you get two hits.”
