Chubbuck battles to Speedway win

HERMON – Scott Chubbuck started in 22nd place in the Rhino Linings Sportsman 100 on Sunday and battled into first place to hold on for the victory at Speedway 95.

Dave McLaughlin of Hermon put on a hard charge at the finish, but couldn’t catch Chubbuck and had to settle for second place. Steve Nelson of Albion came away in third place.

Prescott wins fourth race of ’98

At Evans Mills, N.Y., Steve Prescott of Gardiner continued to roll on the PRO Tour truck series as he picked up the $2,000 winners check on Sunday for capturing the checkered flag.

Gelinas takes win at Beech Ridge

At Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Larry Gelinas of Scarborough helped the Speedway celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday by winning the late model sportsman feature.

Bobby Babb of Windham raced Gelinas down to the wire, but couldn’t pass and settled for second place. Danny Bubar of Windham finished third.

Brackett earns fourth victory

At Oxford Plains Speedway, Tim Brackett of Oxford picked up his fourth win of the season in Saturday’s Pro Stock feature, maintaining a six car-length lead after lap 28.

Brackett cruised past Stan Meserve of Unity and Dana Staples of Farmington, who finished second and third, respectively.

Ilvonen sets Winterport standard

At Winterport Dragway, Uno Ilvonen of Owls Head was not satisfied with breaking his old track record last week, so he went out Sunday and broke it again – three times.

Racing at the first annual Norm Darling Memorial, Ilvonen was clocked at 155.16 miles per hour to break the record. Eventually, he made his way up to 158.44 miles per hour with an elapsed time of 4.570 which will remain the record, for at least one more week.

Reny edges Reno at Wiscasset

At Wiscasset Raceway, Boothbay’s Steve Reny earned his first career win at Wiscasset on Saturday night, taking control of the race on a restart and pulling away for the final 10 laps.

Reny was followed by West Bath rookie Steve Reno, who finished second. Wiscasset’s Scott Chubbuck, currently in the top three in season points, placed third.

Rookie Rood wins at Unity

At Unity Raceway, Albion rookie Willy Rood started in third place in the sport-fours and took advantage of an accident involving race leaders to take the checkered flag on Saturday.

Mike Mason of Bingham took home second place and Fairfield’s Dean Thompson placed third.

Choiniere, Becker win Pro Rally

At Rumford, SCCA Pro Rally defending national champions Paul Choiniere and co-driver Jeff Becker jumped from third- to first-place in the season point standings after racing their Hyundai to the win in the Maine Forest Pro Rally.

The average speed for the event, which ran through the logging roads of the Mead Publishing Paper Division forests, was over 100 miles-per-hour. Choiniere and Becker were being pushed hard by Carl Merrill and Lance Smith until Merrill hit a rock and pulled the half-shaft from the transmission.

The car of David Summerbell and Michael Fennell was also in the hunt until a flat tire ended its day.

Noel Lawler and Charles Bradley placed second with Bill Driegert and Tony Lumino finishing third.
