Augusta West wins third> South Portland American eliminates Camden-Rockport

BELFAST – South Portland American’s John Asdourian was looking for his first hit in the state Little League tourney after going 0-for-6 and it came at an opportune time.

Asdourian’s two-run single during an eight-run fourth-inning rally gave South Portland American the lead for good and hot-hitting Alex Lundgren capped it with a two-run base hit as South Portland American rallied from a 3-0 deficit to eliminate Camden-Rockport 9-3 in all-star action for ages 11-12.

Earlier in the day, Augusta West continued to receive superb pitching and exceptional defense to beat East Biddeford 4-2 and advance into the championship round.

East Biddeford, now 1-1, and 2-1 South Portland American will square off in Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. elimination game at Walsh Field and the winner will meet 3-0 Augusta West at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. A championship game, if necessary, would be held on Thursday at 5:30.

Lundgren opened the decisive fourth-inning rally by hitting a grounder that skipped between the legs of first baseman Andrew DeMichele for an error.

He moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third when Scott Guillereault bounced a single over third baseman Caleb Peats’ head.

Dan Fournier spanked a ground-ball single to center to deliver the first run and Kyle Greenlaw walked to load the bases.

Brandon Wohl flaired a fly ball single to center, just in front of the diving Alex Moro, to score Guillereault and, one out later, Asdourian blooped an 0-2 pitch into right to score Fournier and Greenlaw.

“I was due,” said Asdourian. “He [C-R pitcher Tom Dennen] had thrown me two so I was looking for a curve. He threw me a low curve and I got a good part of the bat on it.”

SP American coach Greg Paulus said Asdourian is a “good contact hitter.”

Anthony Dambrie’s RBI grounder was misplayed for another error and, a strikeout later, Lundgren rifled his two-run single to right.

“He threw me a low fastball that was down the middle,” said Lundgren, who had two hits in the game and is now 5-for-9 in the tourney with a homer, two doubles and three RBIs.

“I didn’t hit well in the districts. I was tense. But now I’m loose,” said Lundgren.

Guillereault’s RBI double, his second hit of the inning, capped SP’s largest one-inning outburst in postseason play.

“We just couldn’t get that first out in the inning,” said C-R coach Scott Benzie. “They made contact and got some timely hits.”

SP righthander Kyle Greenlaw, who uncorked four wild pitches in C-R’s two-run first inning rally, settled down with the big lead and pitched three-hit shutout ball the rest of the way.

“I was so happy we did so good in that inning,” said Greenlaw, who finished with an eight-hitter. He fanned three and walked five.

Lundgren, Guillereault and Fournier had two hits each for SP American while Moro had three singles for Camden-Rockport. Dennen and Calvin Beebe had doubles for C-R.

In the first game, Greg Sousa and Adam Vachon combined on a seven-hitter with Sousa striking out 10 and walking one over 4 1/3 innings and Vachon fanning four over the final 1 2/3 innings. Sousa allowed both runs but one was unearned. Vachon’s save was his sixth of the postseason.

Miles Whitlock had an RBI double in the first for Augusta West and Mike Vallee had a sun-aided two-run double in the three-run second inning as Augusta West built a 4-0 lead.

Bryan Parker had a run-scoring single in the third and Ben Grant-Roy singled home a run in the fifth but a potential second run was gunned down at the plate by center fielder Mark McElmurray.
