Help Maine 4-H’ers

It’s fair time and the rides are twirling, the smell of dough boys and sausage permeates the air, and the shark show is in town. To many this is the Bangor State Fair, but for a large group of area youth, the state fair is the culmination of months of hard work.

We are two such youth who participate in the 4-H Penobscot County Market Lamb Project. In the past, Shop ‘n Save has been the generous primary supporter of this program. Unfortunately, this year it will be unable to provide the same level of support for many of the youth as it has in the past. So we are writing to invite the community to show their support for local youth endeavors by coming to the Bangor State Fair at p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 to the baby beef and market lamb auction. Bids are made on a live weight basis with all money going directly to the 4-H member who raised the animal.

When you participate by successfully bidding on a lamb at the auction, your business or name will be put in the Bangor Daily News on a special half page that covers the auction, and you will get a special buyer’s thank you card with a picture of the lamb and exhibitor. If you decide you don’t want to keep the lamb, you can donate it to a local food cupboard. 4-Her’s often reinvest their money in new 4-H livestock projects or save it for their educational advancement.
