SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. – The Maine Event all-star field hockey team breezed through Saturday’s early rounds at the Cape Cod Classic, but was upset in Sunday’s semifinal round by a team it had beaten Saturday.
On Sunday, Maine eliminated Vermont from the New England Championship 3-0 in the quarterfinals to earn a rematch against Cape Cod in the semis of the two-day event pitting the best high school players from each New England state.
Becky Warren of Foxcroft Academy had a goal and an assist to lead the effort in Sunday’s quarterfinal while Danielle Waugh of Skowhegan and Jo Farrow of Oxford Hills added one goal apiece. Goalies Emily Roy of Winslow and Sadie Garnanche of Biddeford combined on the shutout.
Despite a 30-2 shot advantage in Sunday’s semi, Maine was edged 1-0 and Cape Cod went on to the championship, where it lost to defending New England champ Mass. Public.
On Saturday, Maine started things off with a 1-0 win over New Hampshire, keyed by a goal from Skowhegan’s Tara Bedard.
Warren and Bedard each scored in a 2-0 win over Cape Cod while Kristy Farren of Winslow had an assist.
In Saturday’s final game, Bedard, Waugh, and Jana Ouellette of Jay each scored in Maine’s 3-0 win over Rhode Island. Farren and Hannah Larrabee added assists.
