Searsport students help organize school opening

SEARSPORT — Students and staff of Searsport District High School are invited to attend Planning Day activities on Monday, Aug. 17. Here, students and staff will design the opening day of school as well as develop plans for the school’s operation.

Students and staff who who wish to participate in Planning Day should bring a lunch to the high school gymnasium at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.

“The idea for a Planning Day came from students,” said new Principal Daniel Mills. “I invited the peer helpers to help me think about ways to open school with a welcoming, respectful atmosphere. During their brainstorm they decided to invite every student to plan the opening activities.”

Students will be brainstorming for ideas, trying out those ideas and then dividing up the tasks. “It should be a mixture of fun and hard work,” said Mills, who has experience in organizing large group events.

Some students will work with Agnes Nelson, food services director, to improve lunch, breakfast and snacks. Others will be planning games and activities to welcome the incoming freshman class and to learn about each other. Preliminary ideas include a scavenger hunt, skits, large group games, a picnic, storytelling and performances. Traditional opening day activities will be included, but may be led by students.

Mills wants students and staff to work collaboratively to craft a school climate that is respectful, caring, and passionate about learning. “We want Searsport District High School to be the best school of its size on the coast of Maine,” Mills said.
