McPherson captures overall title> Mapleton driver cruises to first Spud-Unity Challenge; LeBlanc second

CARIBOU – Mapleton’s Tate McPherson didn’t win any races on Sunday, but his performances in Spud Speedway’s twin 50-lap events led him to the Spud-Unity Challenge overall title.

In the first feature, Dale Bowmaster of Arthurette, New Brunswick, took the win, with McPherson second and Frenchville’s Shawn Martin third.

In the second 50-lap event, Caribou’s Bob Anderson took the checkered flag with Tim Ferreira of Unity and Jackman’s Jake O’Brien rounding out the top three.

In the overall standings, Skowhegan’s Marty LeBlanc and O’Brien placed second and third, respectively behind McPherson.

Pratt takes win in 100-lap feature

At Wiscasset, Brent Pratt of Warren went nearly untouched on his way to a 100-lap Strictly Street feature win at Wiscasset Raceway on Saturday.

Kevin Ashline of Pittston finished second and Union’s Bernie Dinsmore third. Phil Poland of Cushing and Mark Thurlow of Lincolnville rounded out the top five.

Melanson captures seventh win

At Hermon, Peter Melanson grabbed the lead on lap 33 of 35 of Saturday’s Late Model Sportsman event at Speedway 95, and held on to take the win.

Melanson, who won his seventh race of the season, was followed by Don Alexander of Levant in second and Orrington’s Jim Goodman in third.

Thorne takes Unity victory

At Unity, Gary Thorne of Augusta inched closer to defending his 1997 season title with a Pro Stock win on Saturday at Unity Raceway.

Thorne outraced Matt Lee of Albion at the end to pick up the win. Art Beam of Levant finished third.

Babcock solid at AMA event

At Pocono, Pa., Craig Babcock of Carmel earned three second-place finishes at the American Motorcycles Association’s Championship Cup Series.

Babcock competed in the 600 endurance, 600 superbike and 600 supersport catagories.

Barnard drives fastest sled

At Winterport, Harold Barnard of Steep Falls won the Fastest Sled competition with a time of 6.122 seconds at Winterport Dragway Scompetition with a time of 6.122 seconds at Winterport Dragway Sunday.

Barnard traveled at 110.29 miles per hour for the victory.

Bill Beaulieu of Gardiner took the runner-up spot in the Pro and Street divisions.
