BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

Alive in the County

Your Sept. 14 article depicting Houlton as the “end of the road” presented one view of our community and its changing economy, but not the only view. I would like the town and the rest of Maine to hear the opinion of those who have not rolled over and died in Aroostook County.

My husband and I are in our 20s and are starting our family. We were both raised in the Houlton area and moved back home a few years ago after my husband’s Navy enlistment. We have good jobs and bought our own home. We have heard the complaints that Houlton is dying and have remained silent, as we keep up with our busy careers and family life. Now, with your article, I cannot remain silent about my views.

We can complain about the state of our local economy, and watch as others “catch” our attitude and run as fast as they can to abandon our sinking ship. Or we can embrace the changes, learn new ways to grow and enjoy the benefits of people coming home to get a piece of the action. There are business people who have also remained silent about the negativity and are doing well. I encourage them to spread the word that they are alive and well. Hollie A. McAfee Hodgdon
