Moose hunters enjoyed a record day on Monday, the first day of the six-day 1998 season.

A total of 618 moose – 503 bulls and 115 cows – were reported killed on Monday, but that number doesn’t reflect the actual total, as only 19 of the 22 tagging stations reported to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Still, the total stands as the most killed in a single day since the state reinstituted the moose hunt in 1980. An additional 500 permits were issued this year, bringing the total to 2,000. On last year’s opening day, hunters bagged only 363 moose.

The largest moose taken was a 1,020-pound monster bagged by a 12-year-old boy and tagged at the Greenville station.
