Asteak leads American shutout of Black Bears

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sage Asteak’s first-half goal sparked No. 19 American University to a 2-0 college field hockey victory over No. 16 Maine on Monday.

Asteak scored off a free hit from Ana Pineyro at 16:52 in the first. The 7-5 Eagles, who outshot Maine 20-4, led at the half by dominating the Bears with their offensive play and shots on goal.

In the second half, Jhoanna Savino scored unassisted at 13:23 to make it 2-0. Senior goalie Stacy Thomas recorded her 24th shutout, stopping Maine’s four shots.

Cindy Botett made nine saves on 12 shots for the 8-4 Black Bears, who suffered their second shutout in a row.

UM-Farmington 2, Endicott 1 (OT)

At Farmington, Stacy Pinkham broke a 1-1 tie with 6:06 left in overtime to lift the University of Maine at Farmington to the win.

Pinkham also assisted on Kristie Cummings’ first-half goal for the Beavers. Erin Sylvia stopped seven of eight shots.

For Endicott of Beverly, Mass., Melissa Curry scored on a pass from Heidi Stevens with 5:05 left in regulation to tie the game. Allison McMore stopped 17 of 22 shots.

Men’s soccer

St. Joseph’s 2, UNE 0

At Biddeford, Mike Bolanz made six saves on 14 shots to post the shutout and lift St. Joseph’s College of Standish past the University of New England.

Matt Sheehan and Mike Herrick scored one goal each for the Monks, who move to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in Maine Athletic Conference play. Chris Payne had an assist.

For the Nor’easters, who drop to 4-5-1, 1-2-1 in MAC play, Rich Niles stopped six of 12 shots.
