ORONO – Jen Varley and Dedra DeLilli scored two goals each, lifting the University of Maine to a 7-4 win over Hofstra University Sunday afternoon.

Maine’s playoff hopes were still dashed Sunday, since the University of New Hampshire won to secure a postseason bid.

DeLilli scored both of her goals in the first half, helping 11-9 Maine to the 3-0 halftime lead. Kristy Knights added a first half goal on assists from Noriko Kariya and Becky Blue.

Blue opened the second half scoring for Maine on a pass from Heidi Spurling. Mary Beth Coughlin added a goal and an assist. Varley scored each of the Black Bears’ final two goals, once unassisted and once on an assist from Blue, who had three assists in the game. Cindy Botett and Danielle Burke combined to make 16 saves on 20 shots.

For 6-13 Hofstra, Lauren Garille tallied two goals and an assist. Janet Walsh also scored two goals. Alison Lanyon and Elizabeth Sturm each had one assist.

Amanda Mahncke and Kellie Moritz combined to stop 18 of 26 shots.

Bates 3, Colby 2 (2OT)

At Lewiston, Amanda Schall provided Bates College with a 2-1 penalty stroke advantage and Peggy Ficks made the lead stand up in goal as the Bobcats downed Colby College.

Kate Oreliana and Sarah McGrath had one goal each in regulation for 7-7 Bates. Leslie Moser assisted on Oreliana’s goal. Ficks made 16 saves on 26 shots.

For 8-5 Colby College of Waterville, Liz Brandt and Marica Ingraham had one goal apiece. Jessie Davis registered one assist. Jane Stevens stopped six of 15 shots.

Men’s soccer

Colby 1, Bates 0

At Lewiston, Mark Melander’s goal with just over five minutes left in the first half provided Colby College with all it would need to defeat Bates.

Melander’s goal came on an assist from Matt Williams for the 7-4-1 White Mules of Waterville. Justin Amirault made eight saves on nine shots.

For the Bobcats, now 7-5, Brian Anton stopped three of four shots.

Maine Maritime 1, UNE 0

At Castine, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners edged into the Maine Athletic Conference playoffs on Sunday, needing overtime to knock off the University of New England.

Brad Pryce scored 2:13 into overtime on a pass from Ope Molley to give the 7-9-1 Mariners the win. Mike Bills stopped six of eight shots to post the shutout.

For the Nor’easters of Biddeford, now 4-11-1, Rich Niles made eight saves on 14 shots.

New Hampshire 2, Maine 0

At Orono, Ethan Holmes made six saves on 19 shots to post the shutout and help the University of New Hampshire defeat Maine Saturday.

Brent Butowsky scored on the rebound of Zach Zeldner’s free kick 10:29 into the first half for the 9-8-1 Wildcats. Matthew Norton later headed in a corner kick from Andy Karam to boost the lead to 2-0.

For Maine, now 5-10-1, Matt Cosgriff made eight saves on 15 shots.

Women’s soccer

Thomas 7, UM-Machias 0

At Waterville, Erika Russell scored five goals as the Thomas Terriers upended the University of Maine-Machias Sunday afternoon.

Russell scored once to close out the first half and added four more in the second half for the Terriers. Vanessa Cayford and Nikelle Henderson each scored a goal and added an assist. Christina Cracolici stopped all three shots she faced.

For the Clippers of Machias, Marita Buteau made 11 saves on 47 shots.

Lasell College 2, MMA 1

At Castine, Jill Kelley netted the game-winner with 22:35 left to lead Lasell College to the North Atlantic Women’s Conference Semifinal win over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday.

Kelley converted a pass from Jamie Frederickson for Lasell. Maria Magazzu opened the game’s scoring with a goal on a pass from Tracey Cameron just 3:10 into the game. Carrie Wood made four saves on nine shots.

For the Mariners, Rachel Merrill notched the goal on an assist from Erin Hoyt. Tracy Forand stopped 10 of 13 shots.

Colby 2, Bates 0

At Lewiston, Heather Garni made 10 saves on 18 shots to post her fourth shutout of the season, lifting Colby College past Bates.

Kara Scheibel scored on a pass from Caitlin Sculley just six minutes into the first half for the White Mules, now 8-4-1. Sara Lovitz added an unassisted goal midway through the second half.

For 7-7 Bates, Susie Arnold stopped 12 of 16 shots.

MMA 8, Lesley College 0

At Castine, Maine Maritime Academy wrapped up its first season of varsity soccer with a third place showing in the North Atlantic Women’s Conference, defeating Lesley College in the conference tournament consolation game.

Erin Hoyt and Rachel Merrill scored a pair of goals each for the 7-12 Mariners. Monica Locke added a goal and an assist, in addition to playing half the game in goal. Tracy Forand, Lynn Bell and Erin Gainsley each scored a goal and Becky Kelso had one assist. Forand and Locke combined for three saves on on five shots.

For Lesley of Cambridge, Mass., Natalie Scott made nine saves on 20 shots.

St. Joseph’s 1, UMF 0 (2 OT)

At Farmington, Heather Pelletier’s goal with 12:10 left in sudden death helped St. Joseph’s College of Standish to the win over University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday.

For the Monks, Kendra Brown made nine saves on 14 shots to post the shutout. Pam Goyette stopped five of seven shots for the Beavers.
