Meeting on game wardens to be held at UM-Machias

MACHIAS — The question of whether Washington County has enough game wardens will be one topic during a Dec. 11 meeting at the University of Maine at Machias.

State Rep. Martha Bagley, D-Machias, said she organized the meeting after some of her constituents expressed concerns about warden staffing patterns and whether the officers have adequate equipment.

The questions arose in light of what some believe to be a high incidence of deer poaching in the county, she said.

Bagley said Col. Timothy Peabody, chief of the Maine Warden Service, and his deputy, Maj. Thomas Sataguida, will be on hand to answer questions from the public. The meeting will be held at 7 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in UMM’s Torrey Hall.

If Washington County doesn’t have enough wardens, Bagley said, the Legislature would be the place to start discussing funding for additional staffers.

Bagley said she has invited members of the county’s legislative delegation to attend the meeting.
