BUFFALO, N.Y. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a new toll-free telephone number for Maine veterans and dependents who are looking for the latest information on VA education benefits. By dialing 1-888-GI BILL1 (442-4551), veterans, dependents, school officials, service officers and others can receive education benefits information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Some of the information available through the new automated system includes general information on VA programs and detailed eligibility criteria.

Veterans, reservists and National Guard members who receive education benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill may obtain detailed information on their own benefits account through the new system. All education callers may also have specific questions answered by speaking with education case managers who are available during regular business hours.

Education benefits information is also available at VA’s Internet Web site at www.va.gov/education. All education claimants seeking answers to questions on their own benefits may send an inquiry by e-mail and it will be responded to directly.

Veterans and dependents seeking information on other VA benefits programs should still call the general toll-free number, 1-800-827-1000.
