President Johnson lied about the Tonkin Gulf incident, President Reagan lied about Iran-Contra, President Kennedy lied about Cuba, President Nixon lied about Laos and Cambodia, and President Eisenhower lied about the U2 spy plane.

And the House has impeached President Clinton for lying about sex?

Could it be possible that all it takes to bring down our government is to invent and encourage the role of a Monica Lewinsky? What next? Nancy Allen Surry

Well, we finally have an impeachable offense. It’s treason, and it was committed by Trent Lott. How dare this self-righteous partisan so vehemently state that Clinton undertook air strikes on Iraq as a last ditch effort to save his own skin.

Lott and his minions are the same group that would be all over the President had he forgone the attack after yet another transgression by Saddam. I do not feel that everyone in the Congress needs to close ranks when we as a country place our military forces in danger, legitimate debate over our foreign policy is a right I hold very dear. However, a blatantly partisan attack from Congress over the actions of any president in a situation such as this is wholly uncalled for and adds significantly to the risk our military must face. It is obvious what we have here is an assassination, and any weapon is fair game. Ron Hidu Hampden

By refusing to postpone impeachment hearings a measly three or four days, the House Republican leadership has aided and abetted our enemies far more than Jane Fonda and the anti-war movement ever did. Kenneth Christian Holden

The scandal America has endured in the present administration seems to have no end. One thing we have learned is that the morals of our country have sunk to a new low.

The acceptance of any lifestyle that anyone comes up with shows where we are heading as a society. Fornication of any kind is no big thing anymore. It’s no one’s business what we do, no matter if it does hurt our country.

Many of our congressmen have spoken out against the actions of the president, but some lost their their courage and compromised and backed down. More power to those who maintained their stand; it takes a lot of courage by them.

If Clinton loves his country, he should resign and save America anymore embarrassment to the office of president. Gene Woodworth Houlton

Clinton himself, not a “vast right-wing conspiracy,” has inflicted excruciating public humiliation upon his wife and daughter. Not just once but by many sordid betrayals. He has broken his oath of office and the laws of the land repeatedly with his irresponsible actions, his brazen lies, his insulting evasions of the truth.

If Clinton were a lesser government official, a member of the armed forces, church pastor, school teacher or even a private businessman, he would be long gone. Do we Americans want a different code for the person who holds the most powerful position in the world? Oliver Holmes Eastport
