Winter meetings slated on livestock farming

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The new Nutrient Management Legislation will affect many livestock farmers in Piscataquis County and surrounding areas. Whether farmers have 50 dairy cows or no animals but use livestock manure or regulated residuals in their cropping program, this new legislation will require livestock farmers to develop a nutrient management plan for their farm.

All livestock farmers desiring protection under the Right to Farm Law will also be encouraged to develop a plan.

The Piscataquis County Office of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Natural Resource and Conservation Service are sponsoring a winter series of meetings on agriculture called “Farming Issues.” To help farmers become more familiar with this new legislation, the first meeting will be on the Nutrient Management Legislation 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Extension office, 59 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft.

Dr. Peter Mosher, director, Office of Agriculture, Natural and Rural Resources, Maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources will talk about the established rules for the Nutrient Management Legislation and how it will affect farm operations.

All people interested in this discussion are welcome to attend.
