School choice reality

It was interesting that a majority of Maine citizens prefer a voucher system school choice for K-12. Competition might be a way to improve school quality providing transportation is not a problem.

Note that the current funding formula for K-8 would not be a problem for school choice since a K-8 school can charge the average cost of that school for tuition. However, 9-12 is a different story. A 9-12 high school can only charge the state average cost.

If a student from another town in a school union or a student from another school administrative district selects a school to attend where the cost of education is above the state average, that student and-or town where the student lives would only have to pay the state average cost. Is that fair as it currently exists?

If the state would approve a change in the tuition charges allowed for 9-12, then maybe reality including competition, school quality and cost would take care of itself. Richard Larson Machias
