MATINICUS — The Coast Guard was called to assist in fighting a fire on a pier on Matinicus Island Monday evening.
The fire consumed a wooden pier, a three-story building and a fuel truck parked at the landing. The truck was believed to contain 2,000-3,000 gallons of No. 2 diesel fuel, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Eamon Meehan.
The cause of the fire was not known early Monday night. The Coast Guard was called to assist at 5:38 p.m., and sent a 41-foot utility boat equipped with a water pump and water gun from Rockland. The 20-mile trip takes about 90 minutes, Meehan said.
A 13-member fire department crew from Vinalhaven Island also assisted. Firefighters had to hose down the fuel truck for hours after the fire was under control.
No injuries were reported, but firefighters were still at the scene late Monday.
