Broncos ride off with PVC XC skiing crown

CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Hampden Academy captured three first places in four races during the cross country portion of the Penobscot Valley Conference skiing championships Thursday at Sugarloaf/USA.

Dexter’s Amanda Thompson highlighted the individual honors with two firsts.

The Hampden Academy boys raced to first-place finishes in the 3- and 5-kilometer races with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while the Hampden girls placed first in the 3K with 16 points. The Stearns of Millinocket girls won the 5K with 23 points and Hampden placed second with 36.

Adam Craig of Dexter notched the victory in the boys 3K with a time of 7 minutes, 53.2 seconds, but Hampden rolled to the next three places with Max Brooks (8:19.1), Pat Woodcock (8:46.8), and Scott Dalessandro (9:00.1).

In the girls 3K, Thompson clocked a 10:16.1 to take first. Hampden’s Kelly O’Brien and Kate Weeks then earned valuable points with second- and fourth-place finishes with respective times of 10:20.1 and 10:38.2. Catherine Delvecchio of John Bapst in Bangor placed third in 10:38.

Brooks again paced the Hampden boys in the 5K race with a first-place time of 17:14.9. Hampden then earned key points by taking places four through eight behind Scott Dalessandro, Justin Groshon, Pat Woodcock, Tony Maietta, and Matt Moretti.

Thompson dominated the girls race again with a winning time of 20:10.2. Stearns gained the win with key places by Laurel Reed in second at 20:31.5 and Elizabeth Reed in fourth at 21:04.5.
