Woodland wins in OT> Dragons stop Mattanawcook, to battle Schenck

BANGOR – The seventh-seeded Woodland High School Dragons, led by tenacious freshman center Julia Knights and surehanded sophomore guard Jessica Noyes, stunned second-seeded Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 65-64 in a spine-tingling Eastern Maine Class C schoolgirl overtime quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium Monday night.

Woodland will now face No. 3 Schenck of East Millinocket in Friday’s 2:05 p.m. semifinal. Both are 14-5. Schenck eliminated Hodgdon 55-42 earlier Monday.

In the nightcap, the Dragons created several second-chance points through their relentless, aggressive rebounding and earned their first win over Mattanawcook after suffering two regular-season setbacks to the Lynx.

The start of the overtime was a microcosm of the game as Knights scored off an offensive rebound, then, after being fouled and missing the free throw, Bonnie Smith rebounded her second miss and scored with a putback.

Brandi Rideout’s runner and Desirae Haines’ two free throws tied it, but Woodland took the lead for good when Knights made a turnaround move and nailed a runner from the lane with 1:50 left.

Ashley Marble and Knights grabbed offensive rebounds and Angela Robb fed Noyes for a short jumper to make it 63-59 with 53 seconds left.

Allison McLaughlin sank an eight-footer from the baseline to cut the lead to two, but Noyes made a behind-the-back pass to Marble for a driving layup with 19 seconds left.

Jen Comeau hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the lead to one and MA had a few possessions but couldn’t get a shot off.

Michaelene Seavey paced Woodland with 16 points, Bonnie Smith had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Knights had 13 points and nine boards. Knights had 10 of her points and six of her rebounds in the second half. Marble added 10 rebounds.

Rideout had a game-high 22 points for Mattanawcook. Cassie Carver added 14 and McLaughlin netted 13 more. Haines and Rideout had seven rebounds each.

In the opener, Schenck forced Hodgdon out of their various zones into a man-to-man with a deliberate ball-control offense in the second half and rattled off a decisive 11-point run to create a comfortable 15-point lead.

“We also wanted to spread out offensively in the second half,” said Schenck coach Jay Brown.

“We settled down in the second half and hit a lot of shots. That gave us the confidence to keep shooting,” said junior point guard Erin Johnston, who had 13 points and ran the offense very efficiently in the second half after picking up three first-half fouls.

Brown switched from a man-to-man to a 2-3 zone in the second half to protect his foul-plagued team.

The critical 11-point run included the final eight points of the third quarter and a 3-pointer by Johnston to open the fourth-quarter that made it 42-27.

Erica Franck ignited the rally with a jumper from the corner, Rachel Larlee hit a turnaround jumper in the paint and then fed Johnston for a layup before Johnston passed to Nikki Brown for a seven-footer from the base line.

Larlee finished with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Johnston had her 13 and Jennifer Glidden contributed 11 points. Franck had a game-high 13 rebounds to go with eight points and Kristen Birt had a game’s-best eight assists.

Sisters Amanda and Holly Quint had 13 points each for the youthful Hawks and Danielle Fitzpatrick contributed 12. Jessica Suitter had a team-high five rebounds as Schenck outrebounded Hodgdon 38-20.

“This was one of our best rebounding games of the season,” said Franck.
