I am writing about Rep. Royce Perkins’ letter (BDN, Feb. 6-7) on the seat belt law. I thoroughly agree with him. I know him and he knows me. I am a very big woman and I make no apologies.
However, the major companies had better make larger belts. I will not subject myself to a too-tight shoulder harness. First of all, I am claustrophobic to a certain degree, and secondly, I have neck and shoulder problems. Please let us adults decide for ourselves. This is supposed to be a free country. Jennifer M. Nelson Hussey of Howland (BDN letter, Feb. 12) feels seat belts infringe upon his individual rights and do nothing to prevent accidents. I disagree. A seat belt can keep a driver under the wheel and in control. I have seen many an accident where this was the case. Recently, on I-95 in Hermon, a 19-year-old girl apparently lost control, was thrown out and killed. A seat belt would have helped to control the car and certainly would not have ejected her.
