UMaine records two victories> Hambelton gives Bears a spark

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team opened its road trip with two straight wins over the weekend, defeating Dayton 12-4 on Saturday before defeating St. Bonaventure 10-6 on Sunday.

On Sunday, John Hambelton homered and drove in three runs to pace the Black Bears.

Hambelton belted a two-run shot in the first inning and finished with three hits for Maine. Brian Poire, Mike Ross, Brett Ouellette and Marc Pantazis had two hits and an RBI apiece. Rusty Tucker went five innings for the win.

Eric Hemphill singled twice and doubled for the Bonnies.

In Saturday’s game, Brandon Brewer homered and drove in three runs as the University of Maine opened its season with a win.

Hambelton doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs for the Black Bears. Ross hit a two-run homer and singled twice to finish with three RBIs. Julian Bracali ripped two singles. Rob Worcester pitched six innings to get the win.

Brent Berrigan doubled and drove in two runs for the Flyers.

Softball

Maine wins two over weekend

At Ocoee, Fla., the University of Maine softball team opened its season with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Black Bears defeated St. John’s University 4-0 before knocking off Providence 13-4 at the Rebel Games.

In the first game, Jen Burton allowed two hits in five innings as the Black Bears shut out the Red Storm.

Burton struck out four and walked none to earn the win for Maine. Kate McKay and Jill Cassie had one solo home run apiece. Burton also singled and doubled.

Tiffany Howerton and Ann Raab had one single each for St. John’s.

In the second game, freshman Leigh Ann Hlywak slammed a home run and added a double, driving in two runs, to lift the Bears. Kate McKay scored three runs and drove in two. Stacey Sullivan singled and doubled to drive in two runs. Katie Fraser ripped a pair of singles. Sarah Jewett doubled in her only at-bat.

Carrie Green picked up the win for the Bears and Nicole Sawyer pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Heather Nathan singled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Friars. Robyn West took the loss.
