DETROIT — One of the state’s largest construction firms, Frank L. Woodworth Inc., was honored Wednesday by a national safety program.

The local firm was rated the second safest firm in the country in the heavy industrial division by the Associated General Contractors of America, the industry’s largest national trade organization.

The annual awards are given to seven construction divisions, ranging from carpentry to highway construction.

Company President Frank L. Woodworth said his 22-year-old firm has won similar awards on the state level, but this is its first national recognition.

Woodworth said he realizes that heavy construction is a dangerous occupation and that safety is his prime concern. “We are committed to making our industry safe for our people,” he said.

The firm, located on Route 100 in Detroit, employs about 30 people, and Woodworth credited the company’s safety record to his sister, Sissy Ayer, who runs the safety program.
