Bears’ bats roar in Florida finale

OCOEE, Fla. – The University of Maine softball team put on a power display at the Rebel Games over the weekend, winning a pair of games. The Bears defeated Quinnipiac 9-1 Saturday morning before beating Rider 12-4 in the afternoon.

Maine wrapped up its road trip with a 15-7 record, the Bears best spring mark ever.

Saturday afternoon, Leigh Ann Hlywak smacked a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to lift Maine past Rider University.

Erica Sobel singled and homered to drive in four runs for the Black Bears. Jill Cassi doubled, singled, scored three runs and had four RBIs. Sara Jewett and Melissa Mather had two hits each. Alice Bishop picked up her fourth win of the year and Nicole Sawyer registered her third save.

Allison Black singled twice and doubled for the Broncs. Courtney Wolfe and Michelle Peel had two hits apiece. Deanna Dovak ripped a two-run homer.

In the morning contest, Hlywak and Karyn McMullin had three-run home runs in the first two innings as the Black Bears downed the Braves.

Sobel and Katie Fraser each belted a pair of singles for Maine. Carrie Green pitched a four-hitter for the win.

Lauren Fries singled in a run for 3-4 Quinnipiac. Darci Santella doubled and scored a run.

Baseball

UMaine drops a pair over weekend

At Homestead, Fla., the University of Maine baseball team lost two games on Saturday to move to 7-7 on the season. The Black Bears dropped a 6-4 decision to Manhattan College in the morning, before losing 6-5 to Rhode Island in the afternoon.

In the afternoon game, Jason Chamsarian’s only hit in five at bats drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Rams downed the Bears.

John Scullin tripled, singled and drove in three runs for Rhode Island. Ryan Cooney added a pair of singles. Sean Carroll allowed six hits and two earned runs to take the win.

Mike Ross drove in two runs for Maine. Quin Pell singled three times and knocked in a run. Jon Hambelton doubled in a run.

In the morning contest, Wendell Anderson’s two-run single in the third inning lifted the Jaspers past the Black Bears.

Tom McDonough drove in a pair of runs with two singles for Manhattan. Kevin Rowett also singled twice. Steve Adams struck out five in six innings for the win.

For Maine, Kregg Jarvais singled and doubled for one RBI. Quin Peel singled and drove in two runs. Brian Poire ripped two singles.
