AUGUSTA — Attorney General Andrew Ketterer announced Tuesday his office had reached an assurance under the Unfair Trade Practices Act with Webber Oil Co. regarding an advertisement for oil and gas boilers.

Webber placed advertisements in November and December in five Maine newspapers (Lewiston Sun Journal, Kennebec Journal, Waterville Sentinel, Bangor Daily News and Ellsworth American) stating that electric rates had doubled or tripled in the past few years, when, in fact, electric rates in Maine in the past several years have increased by less than 3 percent per year.

In the assurance filed in Kennebec County Superior Court, Webber Oil Co. agreed, without admitting any violation of law, to accurately represent the price of electricity in any future ads and also agreed to place corrective ads in the five newspapers.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Ketterer said his office will continue to enforce consumer protection laws to ensure that people receive accurate information involving energy purchases.

“As we approach the beginning of retail choice in a restructured electricity market, it is even more important that sellers of energy provide accurate information to consumers,” he said.

Ketterer also expressed his appreciation for Webber Oil Co.’s cooperation in resolving the matter.
