Cumberland comeback earns sweep of Husson

ORLANDO, Fla. – Lynn Tallent fired a no-hitter, striking out seven and walking two, to pitch Cumberland College of Williamsburg, Ky., to a 3-0 win in the first game of their doubleheader sweep of Husson College at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex Thursday.

Cumberland won the nightcap 6-4 after spotting Husson three runs in the top of the first inning.

Tallent and Melissa Mills each had two singles and an RBI apiece in the opener.

Husson’s Mel Deyone was saddled with the loss, despite allowing only one run over five innings of work. She struck out two and walked one.

In the second game, winning pitcher Jessica Woodard aided her own cause by driving in two runs.

Amy Long added two singles and an RBI for the winners and Shannon Evans singled twice.

Junior Kelly Dow of Calais hit a two-run single in the top of the first inning and Angie Brawn added a sacrifice fly as Husson took an early 3-0 lead. Steph Freeman singled and drove in one in the seventh.

At Irvine, Calif., Justin Duke hit a two-run homer in the first inning to spark Concordia University of Irvine, Calif., to the win over Husson.

Eric Reems added a triple for the winners.

Husson’s Dave Dostie took the loss by allowing five hits, three walks, and five runs over six innings of work. He struck out six. Only one of Dostie’s runs was earned.

Dan Curtis doubled twice, including an RBI double that highlighted Husson’s two-run third inning. Chris Pickering added an RBI groundout. Aaron Largay rapped an RBI single in the fifth, and Jason Cyr tripled.
