PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The University of Maine received solid pitching and powerful offense over the weekend to sweep Pace University. Maine took the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 4-3, wrapped up the day with a 22-6 win and won 17-2 on Sunday.
In Saturday’s first contest, Jim Bailin allowed one earned run over six innings and Matt Truman pitched a scoreless seventh to record the save as the Bears pulled out a win.
Jon Hambelton ripped a two run double and scored on an error during a four-run fourth inning and later added a single for Maine. Quin Peel added a single and a sacrifice fly.
Frank Siano, Phil Ciccone and Henry Meyer had a single and an RBI apiece for the Setters. Joel Filipek allowed three earned runs in seven innings to take the loss.
In Saturday’s second game, Brandon Brewer launched a grand slam and finished with six RBIs as the Black Bears cruised to victory.
Mike Ross homered, ripped three singles, drove in four runs and scored five times for Maine. Peel added four singles, three runs and an RBI. Hambelton doubled twice and scored three times. Keith Genest drove in two runs and scored four without the aid of a base hit.
Marc DeLuca ripped a bases-loaded triple for the Setters, who scored six runs in the second inning.
On Sunday, Kregg Jarvais slammed two doubles, a homer, scored four runs and drove in six as the Black Bears completed the sweep.
Brett Ouellette doubled twice and singled, scoring four runs for Maine. Peel had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Mike Ross added two singles and two RBIs. Josh McCurdy doubled, singled and drove in a run. Kris Ehmke took the win by pitching seven innings and allowing five hits.
Frank Siano singled twice and drove in a run for the Setters. Trevor Mosley added an RBI single.

Husson drops two
In New Castle, Del., on Saturday Husson dropped two games to Wilmington College, losing 4-0 in the first and 9-5 in the second.
Husson’s games against Dominican College of Blauvelt, N.Y., on Sunday were rained out.
In the first game, Steve Groff went the distance giving up four hits, walking two and striking out seven to earn the win.
Randy Hottes and Mike Hamburger each had a single and RBI to pace Wilmington’s four-hit attack.
James Zukowski gave up four hits, two earned runs, walked five and struck out three to take the loss for Husson.
Husson’s Dan Curtis had the only extra base hit of the game with a double in the seventh.
In the second game, Hamburger again powered Wilmington with two singles and an RBI. Alex Rivell had two singles and three RBIs and Hotts roped a solo double in the third.
Jason Cyr drove in all three of Husson’s runs with two singles, a double and three RBIs. The other two Husson runs were scored on errors.

Wilmington sweeps Husson
At Newcastle, Del., Wilmington College pitchers allowed just one run in two games as the Wildcats swept a doubleheader with Husson College of Bangor on Saturday. Wilmington took the first game 5-0 and defeated the Braves 5-1 later in the afternoon.
In the first game, Elaine Wright fired a two-hitter, striking out four and walking none to lead the Wildcats to victory.
Kati Salony ripped two singles and slammed a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning for Wilmington.
Dawn Doucette and Val Rozelle had one single apiece for Husson.
In the second game, Kati Salony allowed six hits over seven innings to pace Wilmington.
Stephanie O’Connor finished with two singles and provided the game-winner for Wilmington with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Nakia Kellan added two singles and drove in a run.
Nicole Mitchell lofted an RBI single in the second inning for the Braves.
