Frankfort voters elect Gordon as selectman, replace road chief

FRANKFORT — Allan F. Gordon Jr. topped a three-man ticket when residents voted this weekend at town meeting for a new selectman.

Gordon was elected to a three-year term as selectman, assessor and overseer of the poor with a total of 107 votes. Coming in second was Reno Thibodeau, with 84 votes. Trailing the field was Joseph I. Watson Jr., who polled 54 votes.

The voters also decided to replace veteran Road Commissioner John Thompson with Earl Anderson Jr. In his first attempt at elected office, Anderson defeated the four-year incumbent Thompson by a vote of 138-115.

Melissa Brassbridge, who was appointed town clerk, tax collector and treasurer in January, won re-election without opposition. “I guess they’re satisfied,” Brassbridge said Monday. “Or nobody wants the job.”

Brassbridge said that about 60 people attended Friday’s town meeting and passed the warrant detailing the coming year’s expenditures with little fanfare.

“It was a pretty quiet meeting,” Brassbridge said. “Most of the discussion, if there was any, was on petitions for support from charitable institutions. Some got what they asked for; some didn’t.

Losing favor with the voters was the Waldo County Committee for Social Action. WCCSA had requested $3,754 for its various programs, and the voters responded by raising $1,984. WCCSA’s transportation, Head Start, weatherization and donated commodities programs survived the budget ax.

One article that fueled the curiosity of voters and required further study dealt with the dam over the Marsh Stream on Route 1A in the center of town. The dam has a small hydroelectric station. The article asked the town to consider three options: renegotiating the contract, removing the dam or removing the hydro station. Residents decided the issue needed a more detailed hearing before a decision could be reached.
