Old Town, MDI, Blue Hill excel at jazz fest

NEWPORT — Ninety-seven jazz groups from around the state competed for top honors in the Maine State Jazz Festival held March 19 and 20 at Nokomis Regional High School.

The three top-rated groups from the high school combo division were: Division I

First place — Old Town High School No. 1

Second place — Mount Desert Island High School No. 1

Third place — South Portland High School Division II

First place — Cape Elizabeth High School

Second place — George Stevens Academy No. 1, Blue Hill

Third place — Fryeburg Academy

The outstanding musicians from the high school combo division were: Division I

Saxophone — Ned Ferm, Mount Desert Island High School

Trumpet — Nicole Edgecomb, Old Town High School

Trombone — Beau Bennett, Old Town High School

Rhythm — Becky Borja, Old Town High School Division II

Saxophone — Sarah Evans, Caribou High School

Trumpet — Tim Butterworth, Cape Elizabeth High School

Trombone — Eric Ambrose, Fryeburg Academy

Rhythm — Seth Kearns, George Stevens Academy, Blue Hill

The three top-rated junior high bands in each division were: Division I

First place — Leonard Middle School, Old Town

Second place — Presque Isle Junior High School

Third place — Memorial Junior High School, South Portland Division II

First place — Loranger Junior High School, Old Orchard Beach

Second place — Warsaw Middle School, Pittsfield

Third place — Caribou Junior High School Division III

First place — Conners-Emerson School, Bar Harbor

Second place — Southwest Harbor Middle School

Third place — Blue Hill Consolidated School

The outstanding musicians for each division were: Division I

Trumpet — Trevor Bozmen, Brunswick Junior High School

Rhythm — Kate Head, Mattanawcook Junior High School, Lincoln Division III

Saturday’s daylong competition ended with an evening performance by the three top-rated high school jazz groups from each division:

First place — South Portland High School

Second place — Westbrook High School No. 1

Third place — Nokomis Regional High School, Newport

Division II

First place — Old Town High School

Second place — Cape Elizabeth High School

Third place — Mount Desert Island High School

Division III

First place — George Stevens Academy

Second place — Stearns High School, Millinocket

Third place — Houlton High School
