Thomas drops 2 in Florida games

FORT MYERS, Fla. – St. Thomas and MacAlester each notched college baseball wins over the Thomas College Terriers of Waterville Thursday.

St. Thomas topped Thomas 9-7 and MacAlester of St. Paul, Minn., rolled 16-4.

In the first game, Jeff Burnham singled twice, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Thomas College Terriers. Scott Sibley added two singles, a double and an RBI and Ryan White singled twice and drove in two.

In the second game, MacAlester’s John Blanc scattered 10 hits over nine innings while striking out three and walking three to earn the win. John Luczak singled, doubled and tripled while knocking in three runs. Matt Kessler singled twice and doubled.

Jeff Burnham singled and added an RBI double to lead Thomas. Ryan White singled twice and doubled.

At Lewiston’s Lafayette Street Field, Michelle Plant went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and a double to pace the University of New England Scarlet Knights to a 12-9 softball win over Bates Wednesday.

Laura Lent had two doubles and two RBIs to help lead a 14-hit attack by Bates. Emily Morningstar and Abbey DeRocker (two doubles) each had three hits.

UM-Farmington sweeps MMA

At Castine, Becky Roake and Stacey Pinkham each hit a first-inning grand slam and combined for 11 RBIs to help lead UMaine-Farmington over Maine Maritime Academy 22-0 in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader and had two hits in the second game, an 11-0 victory for the Beavers.

In Wednesday’s second game, Roake had an RBI-single and added a double. Leah Stats hit an RBI-double and Molly Leopin added a double with two RBIs. Crystal Huilit struck out nine and gave up one walk in the win. UMF scored three runs on errors. Kristi Cooper and Caitlin Carr led MMA with a single each.

In the first game, Roak’s homer drove in the Beavers’ first four runs and she drove in two more runs in the game. Pinkham finished with five RBIs. Leopin added three doubles and a single and scored two runs. For the Mariners, Tracey Forand and Alaina Hanlon each hit two singles.

Bates 20, Maine Maritime 4

At Lewiston, Dave Frederick had four goals and two assists to help lead the Bates College Bobcats to the win over Maine Maritime Academy Wednesday.

Jack Sandler had three goals and two assists for 4-2 Bates. Jon Miller finished with two goals and three assists. Goalies Dirk Huntinton, David Pillsbury, and Ted Trafton combined for 13 saves on 17 shots.

For 3-4 MMA, Justin Thone scored three goals. Craig Fortin saved eight of 28 shots.
