HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Jon Hambelton knocked in four runs with a home run, a double and a single Saturday, leading the University of Maine baseball team to an 11-8 first-game victory over Hofstra and a split of Saturday’s America East doubleheader at University Field.
The Flying Dutchmen snapped the Black Bears’ seven-game winning streak with a 15-8 victory in the second game, but Maine emerged from the four-game series with 14-12 record, including a 3-1 conference mark.
In the opener, Hambelton provided the offensive spark. The sophomore first baseman smacked a two-run home run in the first inning, singled and scored in the second, and rapped a two-run double in the fourth.
Maine took the lead for keeps, 4-3, in the third on Brandon Brewer’s two-out double and an RBI single by Brian Poire. The Bears added three in the fourth when Poire singled, Julian Bracali walked and Mike Ross delivered an RBI single. Hambelton followed with a two-run double down the right-field line.
Kregg Jarvais provided a solo home run and an RBI single, while Brewer rapped a double and two singles. Poire, Bracali and Mike Ross added two singles apiece.
Sophomore righthander Kris Ehmke scattered nine hits and seven runs through six innings to get the win.
Vincent Michello led 6-4 Hofstra with a three-run homer and an RBI single.
Michello was a one-man wrecking crew in the nightcap, slamming three home runs good for 10 RBIs to ignite Hofstra’s 15-hit onslaught. The senior first baseman socked a two-run homer in the first inning, belted a three-run job in the second, and hit a grand slam in the fourth.
Lohman had three singles and three RBIs, James Caroleo drilled a solo homer, a double and a single, and Farley doubled and singled for the Dutchmen behind Matt Kwasman, who spread out 10 hits.
Poire paced the Bears with a solo home run, two run-scoring doubles and a single. Jarvais contributed a solo homer, two singles and a sacrifice fly, while Brandon Brewer had two singles and two RBIs.
Freshman lefthander Rusty Tucker took the loss, lasting only 1 2/3 innings.

Colby sweeps doubleheader
At Wellesley, Mass. – Kris Keelty and Brian DiBello pitched four- and three-hit games, respectively, to lead Colby College of Waterville to a doubleheader sweep – 4-1 and 10-1 – over Babson College Saturday.
In the first game, Keelty (2-1) struck out eight and issued no walks. Bill Goldman paced the offense with two singles, two runs, and an RBI.
Justin Lappen (0-4) took the loss for the 4-11 Beavers.
In the second game, DiBello improved to 3-1 while striking out three and walking two. Colby freshman Jon Lord went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs and Matt Simard hit his second home run of the season.
For Babson, Greg Conant (0-3) took the loss.

UMF, Bowdoin split pair
At Brunswick, Waterville High School product Daren Meader scattered eight hits over seven innings to lead the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers to an 8-2 victory in the first game, while Scott Jamieson of Bowdoin College returned the favor in the second with a seven-hitter in Bowdoin’s 11-3 win Saturday.
In the first game, Mike Fullerton hit a solo homer in the seventh and singled. Meader became UMF’s all-time leader in wins with ??.
Ryan Buckley led Bowdoin with a double and single. Dave DeCew had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Buckley went 3-for-3 with three runs and DeCew was 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the Polar Bears.
Fullerton hit his fourth home run of the season, a two-run homer in the seventh, and a double to lead the Beavers.

Husson drops pair on Saturday
At Orangeburg, N.Y., St. Thomas-Aquinas of Sparkill, N.Y. rallied late in both games of a Saturday doubleheader to sweep Husson College. The Spartans edged the Braves 6-5 in game one and came back with a 13-8 win in game two.
In the first game, Christy Dowling’s single with one out in the bottom of the seventh brought in the winning run for the Spartans.
Jamie Davidson, Kristen Giordano and Jackie Dinuzzo ripped two singles each for St. Thomas-Aquinas.
Junior Kelly Dow slammed a two-run homer for the Braves and Dawn Doucette added a two-run triple.
In game two, the Spartans scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, rallying from an 8-6 defecit to down Husson.
Mary Bullock singled three times and drove in a run for St. Thomas-Aquinas. Dowling also had three singles.
Nicole Mitchell singled three times and knocked in a run for Husson. Sami Hibbard tripled and singled with one RBI. Junior Kelly Dow doubled and singled and freshman Kelly Dow added a triple and single.

Bowdoin sweeps Bates
At Lewiston, Bowdoin College of Brunswick swept host Bates College in the CBB opener for both schools. The Polar Bears pounded the Bobcats in the first game 11-1 and held off Bates 7-6 in the second.
In the first game, Erin McDonough went 2-for-4 with two singles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Jessie Poulin allowed three hits in five innings to earn the win for the Polar Bears.
In the second game, Emily Rizza’s single in the top of the seventh inning delivered Megan Wardrop with the winning run.
Rizza finished with three singles and an RBI for the Polar Bears. Kristie Miller doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs. Megan Wardrop added a double and two singles.
Anna Wulffleff singled twice (2 RBIs) for Bates.
