UMaine salvages two wins> Bears are 5-3 in league

HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine baseball team got a pair of dominant pitching performances on Sunday but was only able to turn the efforts into a single win as the Bears split their second consecutive doubleheader against the University of Hartford.

The Black Bears lost Sunday’s opener 2-1 and won the second game 5-1. On Saturday, the Bears topped Hartford 5-2 in the first game and lost 9-3 in the second.

The Black Bears moved to 16-14, 5-3 in America East play. Hartford improved to 6-15, 3-5.

In Sunday’s opener, Maine’s Robbie Worcester left the game clinging to a 1-0 lead with two outs and two men on base in the seventh but reliever Matt Truman gave up back-to-back singles that saddled Worcester with the loss.

Scott Urbano and John Russo slapped RBI singles that gave the Hawks the win.

Worcester struck out six and walked just one while giving up four hits. He dropped to 3-2.

Mike Ross doubled in the Black Bears’ run in the first inning.

In the second game, Ross paced Maine with a homer, a double, two singles and four RBIs as the Bears rallied to the win.

All of Maine’s runs came in the final two innings.

Rusty Tucker notched his fourth win against three losses for the Bears, allowing just three hits and striking out 10.

Ross belted his sixth homer of the year, a three-run shot, in the seventh inning.

In Saturday’s first game, Ross hit an RBI double and Quin Peel added a two-run double as Maine plated three runs in the top of the sixth. Brian Poire drove in two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a double. Poire also singled.

Hartford’s Mark Rand homered in the bottom of the first to stake the Hawks to an early 1-0 lead. Lance Lamboley added an RBI single in the sixth as Hartford closed to within one run. Rand finished with two singles and a homer.

In the second game, Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Ross and Brett Ouellette each hit RBI singles.

Lamboley highlighted Hartford’s six-run fourth inning with a grand slam.
